Dr Peter Stewart is the Director of Surgery at LASERSIGHT. He graduated from the University of Queensland in 1973 and began General Medical Practice in far western Queensland. Following an inspirational meeting with Professor Fred Hollows, Peter began his training in Ophthalmology in Sydney with Prof. Hollows.
Dr Stewart has been a progressive and innovative surgeon on the Sunshine Coast for the past thirty three years. During the early 1990s he pioneered 'no stitch' cataract surgery in Australia.
Peter's aim, initially for emmetropia (no glasses) following cataract surgery, continues to drive his enthusiasm for refractive surgery.
Peter's dream was to establish a team of specialists in cataract, retinal, oculo-plastic and refractive surgery, and link this with a Day Surgery facility. He has achieved this with the Sunshine Coast Eye Care Specialists, Sunshine Coast Day Surgery and LASERSIGHT at Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.
LASERSIGHT has training centres, theatres and consultation rooms in other areas of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania to which patients travel from around the world.
Peter is dedicated to excellence in the training and education of Eye Surgeons and Eye Care Practitioners throughout Australasia, and was the LASIK trainer of ophthalmologists in Australasia and has now trained more than 300 ophthalmologists since the establishment of LASERSIGHT in 1996.
Dr Stewart has lectured and presented papers extensively in USA, Sth America, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Philippines, Jakarta, New Zealand and Australia.
