How we remove pterygiums
Safe surgery, minimal regrowth
A pterygium is a fleshy growth on the conjunctiva, the outer surface of your eye. It starts in the corner and grows towards the iris, and can begin to affect your vision and appearance. When we remove your pterygia, we can help ensure the chances of regrowth are minimised.
Tissue removal and auto corneal graft.
If you’re diagnosed with pterygia and removal is recommended or preferred for cosmetic reasons, our surgical team can quickly remove them. We recommend a graft procedure in which we take a small slice of your own cornea from outside the vision area, and stitch it over the removal site.
Experienced Surgeons and Advanced Technology
Our expertise in the surgical removal of pterygia and auto corneal grafting has been proven thousands of times. We use the most sophisticated state of the art laser technology to ensure extreme accuracy.
Comprehensive Support and Follow-Up Care
From your initial consultation to long-term follow-up, we’re with you every step of the way, providing comprehensive care to make sure your eye care journey is smooth and successful.
How does Pterygium removal work?
Personalised Care, Tailored Vision Solutions
Our surgical team carefully cuts away all the pterygium tissue. It’s important to ensure we get it all. Then if we’re planning an auto corneal graft we’ll cut a small slice of the white part of your eye (usually under the eyelid, away from the iris) and graft it to the patch where the pterygium has been removed.
Procedure Time
The excision of the pterygium and grafting procedure takes up to 40 minutes per eye, because we need to get all the tissue. We usually do one eye at a time with a lengthy period – weeks if not months – before doing the other eye. Often you may only need the procedure on one eye anyway. Arrange for pick up within about three hours of checking in.
Typical Results
You won’t notice any change in your vision unless the pterygium was affecting the shape of your cornea, in which case the change is almost immediate. Regardless, your eyes will be less prone to dryness, itches or redness, and will look clearer.
Recovery Time
We’ll keep you in a darkened room for up to an hour after completion. Initially you may experience some dryness, a gritty feeling or some sensitivity to light, which can cause watery eyes, and the procedure itself may cause some discomfort. These symptoms usually subside within a few days as your eyes heal naturally, but you can take paracetamol to help. It can take up to a couple of months to fully recover from the procedure. Light sensitivity and accompanying eye wateriness can persist.
