Dr Stephen Bambery is a leading refractive and cataract surgeon in Australia. After graduating from the University of Melbourne in 1978, he later trained in Ophthalmology at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH) and subsequently held a postgraduate position in the United Kingdom. Following this, Stephen held ophthalmologist positions at the RVEEH, the Austin and Frankston Hospitals. He has also visited the South Pacific Islands of Kiribati and Tuvalu, the Solomon Islands and India as a volunteer surgeon.
Stephen is a regular speaker at refractive and cataract surgery conferences and has spoken at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmology Conference, as well as meetings in Indonesia, Poland and the United Kingdom.
In 1991, Stephen was a founding member of the Melbourne Excimer Laser Group and was one of the first surgeons to perform refractive laser surgery. In 1997, Stephen was selected as an investigator for The Australian Implantable Contact Lens Trial. As the first surgeon in Victoria to offer this procedure, Stephen was able to offer more choices to a wider range of people with refractive errors.
Stephen is also dedicated to advancements in intraocular lens (IOL) development for cataract and lens exchange surgery. He has a great interest in the latest toric, multifocal and accommodating lens implants and has presented his results of clinical research on toric IOLs to other ophthalmic specialists.
Stephen is well respected amongst his peers and popular with his patients for his relaxed manner and punctuality. As well as running a busy refractive clinic in East Melbourne he is also the Director of Southern Eye Centre/Southern Day Surgery, a multi doctor ophthalmology clinic and day surgery on the Mornington Peninsula. He is a keen albeit average cyclist and sportsman outside of work and proud father of three sons.
Stephen is a member of the Australasian and American Societies of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and the Australian Medical Association.
